Jeans are a basic wardrobe staple, but it’s not always simple to find the perfect pair of jeans. Today I’m going to break through the most popular sizes, shapes, and styles of jeans out there, and give you tips to find the perfect pair that flatters your body and fits your style.
The Art Of Finding The Perfect Pair Of Jeans
Let’s start with color. Denim comes in a large range of color, from blue so light it’s almost white, to blue so dark it’s almost black. Colored denim is a thing that floats in and out of style, but for today’s purposes, we are going to stay in the blue family.
Which Denim Wash Is Right For You?
- Dark Wash: Dark wash jeans are great for dressing up your denim look, and work well for business casual or going out for a night on the town. Dark wash jeans also look great with all body types and sizes.
- Light to Medium Wash: Light and medium wash jeans are great for everyday wear. Remember, the lighter the wash, the more casual they will look.
- Distressed Denim: Distressed denim be the basis for a great look, but you want to be mindful of where the eyes will be drawn. If you have bleaching or distressing on the hips or thighs, those areas will be emphasized and look larger.
What Rise Is Right For You?
There are three basic rises to jeans, and each one serves a different purpose. It’s important to know which one is right for you.
- Low-Rise: Low-rise jeans are great for giving slender women a bit of a curvy hip, but you want to make sure they fit snugly so you don’t have a large gap at your waist.
- Mid-Rise: Mid-rise jeans sit just below your belly button, and are a great fit for most body types. I toggle between low-rise and mid-rise but this has been one of my favorites, as it is the most comfortable.
- High-Rise: High-rise jeans have been making a comeback in recent years. They are a classic look that work well especially for athletic body types. The high-rise is also great for people who struggle with their midsection, as long as you get a pair with a bit of stretch.
Finding The Right Fit Of Jeans
A pair of jeans can look completely different depending on the rest of your outfit and how you accessorize them.
Right now I’m loving these OTK boots, and am pairing them with my favorite Madonna Legging from Liverpool jeans. They are giving me a classy look, that I’m planning to carry with me through the end of winter.
There is more than one fit that will work with your body type, so I encourage you to try a new style the next time you are at the store.
Skinny Jeans
Skinny jeans aren’t just for skinny people. The name implies that they are skinniest at your ankle compared to other jeans. They look great with boots. You can either tuck your skinny jeans into tall boots or give them a slight cuff and pair them with ankle boots.
The key to well-fitting skinny jeans is making sure you buy a pair with a bit of a stretch.
Straight Leg Jeans
Straight leg jeans are a more relaxed version of the skinny jean. They look great with ballet flats or sandals.
Boyfriend Jeans
Boyfriend jeans can have a real slouchy look, so you want to make sure you are pairing them with fitted shirts. You can also add a blazer and heels to dress them up. I love a bit of a cuff at the hem of boyfriend jeans, too.
Bootcut Jeans
Bootcut jeans are a classic silhouette. They are tight in the leg, and then flare out at the bottom – giving them a more polished look than a traditional flare-cut jean. As the name implies, they look great over a pair of boots with a heel.
Flare Jeans
Flare jeans, also known as bell-bottoms are great for a vintage look. Pair them with shoes that have a bit of a heel and make sure your jeans are still long enough reach all the way to the floor.
