How To Organize Your Day As An Entrepreneur
Whether you are already living the entrepreneur life, or you are working on taking that next step to become your own boss, success starts with organizing your day. I find even the busiest of days goes better when I stick to my routines, prioritize important tasks, and stay focused.
How To Organize Your Day As An Entrepreneur
Start With A Nighttime Routine
I know this sounds backwards – start organizing my day by what I do at night – but I have found that the things I do at night directly impact how the next day starts. Simple things like setting out your clothes for the next day and planning breakfast will keep you from having to make decisions first thing in the morning, leaving your mind clear to start the day strong. I also like to make my to-do list before bed so I can go to sleep with a clear plan and a clear mind.
Prioritize Your To-Do List
Your to-do list is all written out, but if you are like me, it’s way too long to accomplish in one day. This is where prioritization comes in. Evaluate your list and identify the three things that you must accomplish. Then identify which one of these things is the hardest and do it first! Getting to check that thing off your to-do list early in the day is going to feel great.
Set A Timer
Give yourself a specific amount of time to work on each task, and set a timer. If you use a calendar app to keep track of your meetings, start blocking out chunks of your day to work on the tasks you have on your to-do list. It also helps to batch similar tasks together and work on them in the same block of time.
Don’t Let Email Take Over Your World
One of the hardest, yet most rewarding, things to schedule is the time you spend in your inbox. I like to turn the email notifications off on my phone and only check my email during specific times. Try to set aside 2-3 times in your day that you will deal with emails and don’t visit your inbox outside of those times.
It’s not easy, especially in the beginning, but you will find you can work more efficiently on other things when you don’t have the constant distraction of emails pulling you away from other important things. It can also help to set up filters and labels in your inbox, so you can see at a quick glance what you need to open first.
Make Time For Yourself
It doesn’t matter if you are trying to build a business, grow a blog, write a book, or create a class, you can’t spend every waking hour of your day working. That’s a sure path to burning out. You need to schedule time each day for yourself. Focus on something other than work during this time. I suggest taking an actual lunch break instead of trying to multitask while you sit at your desk. Go for a quick walk outside. Read for 30 minutes. Take in a quick yoga class.
One of the benefits of being your own boss is getting to set your own schedule. Start being intentional about that practice from the beginning and you will set yourself up for success.
