Essential Photography Equipment For Fashion Bloggers
You can’t be a fashion blogger without pictures. Sure, you could write about fashion as an idea, break down color, fit, and style, but your readers want to see the pieces they are reading about. Whether you are taking your own pictures, or you have a helpful partner or friend who steps behind the lens for you, today we are going to talk about essential photography equipment for fashion bloggers.
Essential Photography Equipment For Fashion Bloggers
The first piece of photography equipment for fashion bloggers is a camera. I have a Canon EOS T6i. I’ve written previously about how much I love my camera for fashion photography, especially the wifi and touchscreen features. If you haven’t used a DSLR camera before, there is a bit of a learning curve, but the more you test out the different settings, the better your pictures will get!
Once you have your camera body, you are ready for the rest of your photography equipment.
Camera Lens
When you buy your DSLR camera, it will usually come with a kit lens. Kit lenses are inexpensive, small, and light lenses that act as starter lenses. They honestly aren’t that great, and you are going to want to invest in a better lens, especially as you start mastering all of your camera settings.
My favorite lens is the 50mm 1.4. It’s a great lens that will work for most shots you are trying to take as a fashion blogger, and will help you achieve that dreamy blurred background. If you want to do close-up shots, a macro lens will help you capture small accessories or beauty products.
Diffuser and Reflector
When direct sunlight is causing harsh shadows in your photos, a diffuser can help you turn it into a softer light. You simply place it in between the subject of your photos and the light source.
Reflectors help you to direct light onto your subject without having to use a strong flash. I like this Diffuser and Reflector kit, because it has everything you need to control light, and the pieces fold up into a pouch. Obviously these are a little harder to use if you are taking pictures of yourself, but with the help of an assistant, they can work wonders.
Artificial Light
When you need even more light to control, an artificial lighting kit can be the answer. If you are shooting indoors, and the room isn’t flooded with natural light, you probably need extra light. Artificial lights can also be used outdoors for people who live in areas where there is a lot of cloud cover year-round like we have in the Pacific Northwest.
Tripod and Remote Shutter
Tripods are great for getting a steady shot. They are also invaluable if you are staging and photographing yourself. While you can use the timer function on your camera to take photos of yourself, you will find that it is much easier to set your camera or phone up on a tripod and use a remote shutter to capture a shot. You can hold it behind you discretely, and no one will see it in your photograph.
A Sense Of Fun
That isn’t really a piece of equipment, but it is essential for all your fashion photography shoots. Remember to have fun and enjoy yourself. Smile a little! It’s good for your soul and your pictures.
