My hair is super thick and doesn’t hold curl well. Can you relate? I’ve tried curling irons in the past that seem like they are giving me a great curl….for about ten minutes. Then I can just watch the curl fall right out of my hair and become less than a wave. I needed a curling iron that could stand up to my thick hair and make those curls hold, and I’ve found it! The Beachweaver B1 Midnight Rose is my new favorite hair tool. If you have super thick hair, like me, or thinner hair that needs less heat, this is a great curling iron.
There are a couple of things about the Beachwaver that make it stand out.
First, it has a short clamp.
I love the short clamp, because it’s just enough to hold my hair in place to start the curl! It saves me from that awful, harsh kink that often comes with a full-length clip iron. This makes the Beachwaver almost like using a curling wand, but I like having that first little bit of curl secured in the clamp to make it easier.
Second, the barrel rotates!
This is the best! The Beachwaver has an ergonomic handle that is easy to hold, and you simply press the button to make the barrel rotate – it rotates in both directions, so you can easily set your curls in either direction. This is also superior to a wand in my mind, because I’m able to let the barrel do all of the work. You just hold the iron in place (holding it vertical for simple curls or horizontal for curls with more volume).
The Beachwaver is great for all hair types, because it offers three heat ranges. With my thick hair, I usually use the medium setting (350°F), and I love the 1″ barrel. It’s a really versatile size, allowing for a variety of styles. And the midnight rose color is just really pretty.
The initial curl is super tight, so it does fall a little bit as it cools. I’m left with a perfect curl after that, though, and it stays in for a long time.

Tips for Getting Great Curls To Hold in Your Hair
Here are a few of my favorite tips for getting great curls.
- Prep your hair. A generous dollop of mousse and a light misting of hairspray before you begin curling will help your curls to hold. If you don’t love mousse, you can skip it, but don’t skip the hairspray! I promise a light misting won’t hold your hair down if you apply it before the heat. Make sure to use a great heat protectant, too!
- Don’t go too hot. I’ve never used the hottest setting on the Beachwaver, and most of you won’t, either. For people with thin hair, the low setting (290°F), is exactly what you need. If you go too hot, you will damage your hair. In addition to watching the temperature, you want to watch how long you hold the iron on your hair. 5-10 seconds is the max amount of time you should use the iron on each section of hair.
- Be consistent. To the last point, make sure the amount of time you hold the iron on your hair is consistent for each section. You also want to be consistent in the amount of tension you apply and the direction you are curling your hair on each side.
- Let your hair cool all the way before you touch it. With my thick hair, I usually wait 10-15 minutes before I touch my freshly curled hair. That means no brushing and no running my fingers through my curls. This cooling time will allow the curls to set. Don’t worry if they are a little tighter than you want them to be, they will fall slightly when you finish styling. Once my hair is cooled, I tousle the curls with my fingers, or brush them out if I’m wanting more of a wavy look.
- Finish with texturing spray. I find that texturizing spray helps to hold the curls without weighing them down. It also gives them a slightly more defined look, and is one of my favorite products for days when I’m curing my hair and days when I’m flat ironing it.
