There are some styles that never go out of fashion. We may reinvent them a bit, approaching them in new ways, but we go back to them time and again. For me, the nautical look is one of these styles. It’s a classic. While I don’t wear anchors and ship’s wheels every day, I do find myself embracing the spirit of the nautical look quite often.
Classic Nautical Striped Top
The striped top an essential wardrobe staple for me. If it’s possible to own too many striped tops, then I admit I am guilty – but I don’t really believe there is such a thing as too many striped tops.
I recently wore this Market & Spruce Marybell bell sleeve knit top at Emerald Downs for the Longacres Mile. My favorite thing about this top is, of course, the bell sleeves. They are to die for, and I was drawn to the top from the moment I saw them. Even though it’s not strictly a nautical piece, I think it carries the nautical spirit.
This top was great for a day outside in the sun. The material is soft and stretchy and it breathes well. It was pretty hot at the track that day, so I was glad I had my Panama Jack sunhat with me, too. It always makes me feel like I’m ready to head off on a cruise.
I paired this top with dark denim pants for the track, but it would also look great with shorts or even a denim skirt. Stripes and denim are a great combination, and nothing says you are ready for an adventure at sea like adding a pair of crisp, white canvas shoes to your ensemble.
Another easy way to add a little touch of nautical whimsy to your outfit is to focus on your accessories. You can try adding:
- Rope chains
- Twisted bracelets
- Pearl earrings
- Scarves in navy and white or traditional nautical patterns
- Large woven or canvas bags
- Blazers with gold buttons
The key to making the nautical style work is to keep it as simple as possible. I try to stick to one strong nautical piece at a time, especially when I’m adding accessories. Most of all, keep it fun.
What is your favorite classic style? I know I’m not the only one who will always love the nautical look.
XOXO,
